I was worried about you

Ana

A booming roll of thunder makes me flinch and brings my thoughts back to the present. I set the knife that I’m holding down and chuckle at myself for being so jumpy. Gathering the sliced potatoes up, I dump them in the pot with the rest of the roast.

As the first rain pellet hits the window, my anxiety makes my skin crawl a little. He should be back by now. I light the burner and wash my hands as I glance around the clearing in front of the cabin. Where the hell is he?

I can’t get rid of my anxiety, so I give up and lean into it instead like I have been these days. Slamming another pot down, I make some coffee and glare at the door. It’s almost supper. He’s been gone for hours and now he’s going to be soaked.

Why do I even care? Shouldn’t I be happy that my abductor is gone? I understand it’s more complicated than that. I mean, I have to take his word for it, I guess.

I push that aside as soon as my coffee is ready. Taking my mug onto the porch swing, I watch the rain start pouring to the ground. I’m glad he doesn’t lock the door anymore because I don’t like feeling trapped. Also, he knows I have nowhere to go.

Wrapping myself in my sweater, I tuck my feet up and stare into the swaying trees and the rain falling down, trying to push away my unease. But when he still doesn’t show, I sit and stew with irritation.

When I’m practically fuming at the atv path and the storm rages violently through the trees, I finally hear him. He rounds the corner out of the path, but I can hardly see him through the rain. Putting my coffee on the little table beside the swing, I stand, ready to tell him off for…I don’t know exactly what for, but we’re about to have an argument! He wanted to kidnap himself a girlfriend, so here we go!

His dark, blurry figure hops off the machine before jogging up the steps. I clench my fists and take a deep breath in preparation as he shakes his hair out.

“What the hell took you so long? I’ve been waiting here for hours, and you said you were only going to check on the traps!” I stomp my foot when he won’t even look at me. Instead, he takes his boots and jacket off before ringing out his clothes. “Nikolai!”

Finally acknowledging me, he throws his amused grin behind him as he leans on the railing to take his socks off. That’s when I see it.

“Oh my God, what happened to you?” I rush over to him and grab his arms. He’s covered in blood! His clothes are soaked in it! I move his arms around to try and find the wound.

“I’m fine.” He grabs my hands to try and stop me, but I rip out of his grasp. His definition of ‘fine’ is clearly not good enough.
